What is THC?

THC is the abbreviated term for tetrahydrocannabinol. It is the main compound found in cannabis plants that is responsible for its psychoactive effects.

Many people think of THC as recreational and CBD as medical, however it isn’t quite as simple as that. Both CBD and THC are compounds found in cannabis, and both play their own role in how it affects the brain and body.

It is only recently that we are discovering the true benefits of THC in medicinal marijuana. For example, high THC strains are often used by people suffering from insomnia, stress, eating disorders, PTSD and chronic pain, which just goes to show the far reaching benefits of the different types of cannabis strain.

How does THC work?

THC works by dulling down our senses. It does this by attaching to CB1R receptors on neurons that operate circuitry in the brain cells that deal with emotion, pain, pleasure, cognition, memory, physiological and movement. This is why the highest THC strains often have disorienting effects such as memory loss or a reduction in motor function.

What are the strongest strains of weed?

Given the effects that THC has on the brain it makes sense that all of the strongest strains of weed are high in THC. Here is a list of our five recommended super-potent high THC seeds for you to grow.

How to increase THC

Browsing our list of the strongest strains of weed is a good start, however if you really want to push the boundaries of THC production in your plants there are a few things you need to be doing.

Good lighting can increase potency

If you want to grow high THC strains then to really get the most out of the plants use some good quality LED or HID lights.

Lights is food for plants and without good quality light yields and quality will suffer, this includes THC levels.

Happy plants = high THC weed

Even the tiniest amount of stress can jeopardize yield and THC levels, especially if it happens during the middle of flowering when the plant is producing its buds.

Keep your plants happy by avoiding silly mistakes such as over and under watering, heat stress, light leaks, nutrient burn etc. Keep a close eye on your grow and check the health of the leaves regularly.

Pay attention to the leaves of the plant. Leaves are the first part of the plant that begin to show stress, such as wilting if over watered or yellowing from nutrient burn.

When to harvest for the highest THC levels

Cannabis plants have a very short window of around 2-3 weeks during the end of the flowering stage when they are most potent.

To optimize potency when you are growing high THC seeds you should harvest when the trichomes have turned milky white in colour.
